Review: Avalon Grille – Elevated Island Dining with a View

Avalon already feels like a postcard, but Avalon Grille somehow makes it feel even more cinematic. Sitting right along the waterfront, the restaurant glows at night—warm lights, big windows, and an atmosphere that feels both special and relaxed. It’s the kind of place where you instantly sit up a little straighter, but you’re still comfortable enough to laugh and enjoy the moment.
Inside, the design is modern but not cold—dark wood, soft lighting, and a layout that gives everyone a good view of the ocean. The room has this calm buzz to it, like everyone knows they’re in one of the nicer spots on the island but no one’s trying too hard. It’s trendy in a clean, polished way, the kind of place where the food and the setting feel equally important.
We ordered three dishes, and each one had something memorable about it.
Kurobuta Pork Chop
This dish was honestly impressive. The pork chop itself was thick and beautifully seared, with that caramelized crust that gives you a little crunch before you hit the juicy center. But the sides are what made it unforgettable. The cheesy grits were insanely smooth—almost like a savory cloud. They had this rich, buttery flavor with just enough cheese to make them comforting without being heavy. Every bite felt warm and cozy. Then there were the cherries. They weren’t just tossed on top—they tasted like they’d been cooked down until they were soft and glossy, with this sweet‑tart flavor that cut through the richness of the pork and the grits. When you got a bite with everything together—the pork, the cherries, the grits—it was one of those moments where you stop talking and just appreciate how good food can be.
Baby Kale & Pear Salad
This salad looked simple at first, but it had a lot going on. The pears were crisp and sweet, almost like they’d been picked at the perfect moment. The baby kale was tender (not the tough kind that makes you feel like you’re chewing forever), and the dressing was bright and slightly tangy, coating everything lightly instead of drowning it. There were little textures throughout—maybe nuts or shaved cheese depending on the season—that made each bite feel different. It was refreshing and balanced, the kind of salad that actually makes you want to keep eating it.
Avalon Burger (Protein Style – Lettuce Wrap)
Even without the bun, this burger held its own. The patty was juicy and seasoned well, with that slightly smoky flavor you get from a good sear. Wrapped in crisp lettuce, it felt lighter but still satisfying. The toppings added a lot—fresh tomato, melty cheese, maybe a house sauce that brought everything together. The lettuce wrap stayed surprisingly intact, which is not always the case, and it made the whole thing feel like a cleaner, fresher version of a classic burger.
Avalon Grille is one of those restaurants that makes a Catalina trip feel complete. The location is unbeatable, the atmosphere is stylish without being stiff, and the food is thoughtful, flavorful, and honestly pretty memorable. The Kurobuta Pork Chop alone is worth the visit, but everything we tried had its own standout moment. If this is what Avalon Grille is serving now, I’d definitely go back the next time I’m on the island.
